Research & Development
Since 1908, the year Briggs & Stratton was founded, engine research and product development has been a primary focus. Just a few historic breakthroughs that illustrate our dedication to engine development and product innovation include:
- the industry's first OHV engine in 1920
- the industry's first vertical shaft aluminum block engines in the 1950s
- the industry's first V-Twin aluminum block engine in 1984
- the industry's first 31 HP Air-Cooled, V-Twin engine in 2002
Research and development continues to be the force that drives our commitment to provide advanced engine solutions to meet ever-changing power, performance and emissions requirements. The culmination of what we learn establishes the framework to:
- develop innovative engine technologies
- modify existing technologies
- improve commercial engine power, performance and reliability
- employ advanced testing and analysis capabilities
Every day more than 300 people with a passion for engines work to research and develop solutions to meet the power requirements of leading equipment manufacturers around the world.
