BIG BLOCK AIR COOLED V-TWIN 5 YEAR CELEBRATION

Briggs & Stratton® Commercial Power Celebrates Five Years of Vanguard BIG BLOCK Air-Cooled V-Twin Power
Vanguard BIG BLOCKs are the most proven high-horsepower air-cooled powerplants available, with more than 50,000 engines in-the-field to-date.

MILWAUKEE, WI – January 22, 2008 – Briggs & Stratton® Commercial Power is celebrating the fifth anniversary of the launch of its revolutionary Vanguard BIG BLOCK V-twin engines at World of Concrete 2008 in Las Vegas, NV. First released in February 2003 in a 31-horsepower version, the Vanguard BIG BLOCK V-twin engine answered the industry's call for more power and performance from air-cooled commercial engines.

"We're proud of the fact that, after five years and with more than 50,000 engines hard at work, Vanguard BIG BLOCK V-twins continue to satisfy our customers' need for increased power and torque combined with reduced weight, cost and maintenance," said Dan Roche, marketing manager at Briggs & Stratton Commercial Power. "Vanguard BIG BLOCK V-twins deliver tremendous power and value, with a simplified design that offers the durability commercial contractors expect. Plus, their overall parts, labor and equipment costs are significantly lower than those of liquid-cooled V-twins offering similar power."

Today, the line has grown to include horizontal shaft models in the 25 to 35 gross horsepower range, and vertical shaft models in the 30 to 36 gross horsepower range. The Vanguard BIG BLOCK V-twin engines are manufactured in by DBS, a Briggs & Stratton Commercial Power joint venture with Daihatsu, a member of the Toyota Group.

For the groundbreaking BIG BLOCK V-twin design, Briggs & Stratton Commercial Power developed an Advanced Debris Management system that allows the engines to run cooler and cleaner, enhancing durability and performance. A fully-pressurized oil lubrication system with spin-on oil filter extends service intervals and engine life, while a five-inch centrifugal multi-stage industrial air cleaner provides maximum engine protection, especially in dirty, dusty conditions.

The BIG BLOCK V-twin design is based on Overhead Valve (OHV) technology that provides superior balance and low vibration. A number of features contribute to the commercial-grade durability of the BIG BLOCK engines, including cast iron cylinder sleeves, industrial-grade solenoid shift starter motor and steel-backed aluminum bearings.

Additional Vanguard BIG BLOCK air-cooled V-twin features include:

-Tuned intake and exhaust systems – Results in a quieter-running engine.
-Large-volume muffler with specially-baffled chambers – Minimizes noise.
-Low fuel consumption per HP – Less frequent refueling stops.
